Face of a Nation Photograph by Robert Clark
Once thought to be a death mask made from Nelson's corpse, this cast was in fact produced during Nelson's life. The admiral spent the month of August 1800 in Vienna, Austria, where sculptor Franz Thaller had the cast made as a model for him to sculpt a bust of Nelson. "It is as near to the real face of the man as we can get in the 21st century," says historian Andrew Lambert. "It allows us to gaze on the face of the hero."
