Spanish underwater archaeologist Mercedes Gallardo Abárzuza, with help from colleague Josefa Martí Solano, measures the back end of a gun from the French flagship Bucentaure. Another gun points directly at the camera. The Bucentaure, crippled by Victory's guns, sank just outside Cadíz, Spain, in the storm that followed the battle. Today divers have found 22 cannon here, some almost 11 feet (three meters) long, and are equally fascinated by the other objects—ammunition, copper planks, and pieces of water pumps—strewn about the site. "Sometimes I think about how the battle was," says Abárzuza, "a ship in deplorable conditions trying to reach Cadíz, fighting against the storm to survive, and finally not achieving it."
