Island Adornment Photograph by David Liittschwager and Susan Middleton
Brightening the shorelines of almost all the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, this species of portulaca (Portulaca lutea) is found across the Pacific, its tiny seeds easily dispersed by ocean currents. Like other plants in the island chain, it faces competition from non-native plants deliberately or accidently introduced. Field biologists with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are actively weeding out the intruders. This specimen was found in the French Frigate Shoals.
