The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are all protected and hold most of the coral reefs in the U.S. The six-mile-wide (ten-kilometer-wide) lagoon of Kure Atoll (far left) laps on the most distant and oldest land. The youngest island, 190-acre (77-hectare) Nihoa, is home to 19 bird species, two of them found only here.
