Safe Haven Photograph by William Albert Allard
Guided by their handlers, or mahouts, elephants finish their morning bath on the banks of the Mae Taeng River in Thailand's Elephant Nature Park, a refuge for elephants who are injured or out of work. Says founder Sangduen Chailert, "I try to save as many elephants as I can and give them a home where they can live as naturally as possible." Saving Thailand's endangered Asian elephants will be an uphill struggle: Fewer than 6,000 now remain.
