A New Life Photograph by William Albert Allard
Maximus, one of the tallest domestic elephants in Thailand, makes his home at Sangduen Chailert's Elephant Nature Park, north of Chiang Mai. A few years ago, two park volunteers found Maximus at the Surin Elephant Round-up Festival, where he was suffering from a broken leg. He had been hit by an 18-wheeler while walking down a busy highway and had not received full medical treatment. "After nearly three years of love and treatment at the park, Max is now a healthy elephant," says Chailert, "but he will always have a limp as well as some real psychological trauma."
