With some resident dogs by his side, a mahout at the Elephant Nature Park watches as his charges amble toward the river. In addition to elephants, Chailert and her staff care for dozens of dogs and cats, all rescued from the streets of Chiang Mai. Many of the elephants ignore the dogs or kick at them, but some seem to get along. "We have one who even lets his dog friend ride on his back," says Chailert.
