Portrait of a Victim Photograph by William Albert Allard
Severely underweight at 66 pounds (29 kilograms) the day he was born, Tiny and his mother, Paitoon, were immediately brought to the Elephant Hospital in Lampang—the first such hospital in the world. There the baby began to grow and nurse at three months. When he was just six months old, his owner sold him to a mahout, who used him to earn money on the streets. Almost a year later, Tiny was brought back to the hospital, where he died from pneumonia within an hour.
