Animals as Amusement Photograph by William Albert Allard
Tourists soak up the atmosphere as they watch elephants perform and work at the Mae Ping Elephant Camp. Since logging was banned in 1989, about half of Thailand's domestic elephants began working for such tourist camps, where they carry visitors on treks through the forest. Life outside these camps can be much tougher. Many elephants are forced to roam city streets with their mahouts, who charge onlookers to feed and photograph the animals.
