Thai Elephants
OCTOBER 2005
|
In Thailand, wild elephants have it pretty good: They're legally protected. Tame elephants, on the other hand, live with a more uncertain fate. Considered livestock, they rate no protection from being maimed or killed by cruel handlers. But activist Sangduen "Lek" Chailert is changing that with the creation of the Elephant Nature Park, a sanctuary north of Chiang Mai where rescued elephants can heal and thrive. Get a glimpse into her success and challenges in these segments from Vanishing Giants, an award-winning film documented by journalist Jennifer Hile.
