The Secrets of Longevity
NOVEMBER 2005
|
Fast-food Nation Photograph by David McLain
Strolling down the main street of her village, teenager Anna Masini, at right, crunches on increasingly popular french-fry-shaped potato chips. With more young people replacing the traditional Sardinian diet—which includes vegetables, beans, locally produced cheese, and a bit of red wine—with junk food, obesity rates, virtually zero before 1940, have risen to nearly 10 percent. It's a familiar trend, says photographer David McLain. "Some of the traditional cultures that foster longevity are disappearing."
