Island of Ocelots Photograph by Christian Ziegler
In Panama, high ground peeks through thick fog on the approach to Barro Colorado Island, home of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, dedicated to the study of rain forest ecosystems. The island is in the middle of Lake Gatún, an artificial body of water formed by the construction of the Panama Canal. Although the canal appears to be a barrier to animal migration between North and South America, well-forested islands like Barro Colorado are like stepping-stones for animals attempting to swim across the canal.
