"I moved to Maurice to express my artistic side," says Alexander Caldwell (a native of nearby Baton Rouge), who holds two of his creations: purses made of fine silver, translucent enamels, gemstones, and gold adornments. An engineer by training, Caldwell began making his eggs in 1991. He gives them such regal names as the Diamond Studded Silver Coronation (foreground, above), and sells them to collectors for princely sums, ranging from $4,000 to $7,000 each.
