Circle of Snows
Photograph by Norbert Rosing

Huddled in a protective circle against predators, a flock of snow geese—flightless after molting in summer—swim with their goslings  on a shallow pond in Canada's Wapusk National Park. On the western shore of Hudson Bay almost 200 species of birds congregate in the park, including breeding and migrating waterfowl and shorebirds. Snow goose populations have exploded, and for more than 25 years researchers have studied the impact of severe overgrazing by snow geese in the Wapusk area.
