Morning commuters pour from their trains in Grand Central Terminal at the heart of New York City. Serving riders as far as 87 miles (140 kilometers) away in Connecticut and New York, Grand Central is one of the world's largest commuter rail stations. But it's not just trains that bring folks here: Some 700,000 people pass through every day—many just to shop, eat, and sightsee in this historic public space, which was saved from demolition in the 1960s and fully restored in the 1990s. With marble floors and vaulted ceilings "it's a really spectacular place," says photographer Ira Block. "But a lot of people don't notice it. They're rushing to work."
