Rising Power in the North
|
Since 1991, the Kurds of Iraq have controlled an autonomous region in the mountainous north. Today they are intent on expanding that freedom under a new constitution that calls for a federated state, demanding control of traditionally Kurdish areas, such as oil-rich Kirkuk, that fall outside the de facto border.
