Return of the Lynx
JANUARY 2006
|
New Mother On Guard Photograph by Amy Toensing
A mother lynx watches as biologists work with her newborns. When a litter is found, biologists count the offspring, record the genders, and implant a tiny identifying microchip in each kitten. "We need to monitor the cats born in Colorado," says Tanya Shenk. "We want to make sure the kittens are living complete lives." If the lynx continue to survive—and sustain their population over time—the reintroduction program will be declared a success.
