Heartbreak on the Serengeti
FEBRUARY 2006

Dance Night Photograph by Randy Olson
Maasai warriors, whose fierce ancestors inspired fear among early explorers of East Africa, now dance for a small fee at tourist lodges in Tanzania. Performing at the Serena Safari Lodge at the rim of the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, Maasai from the nearby village of Ilmisigiyo have no interaction with patrons. Local Maasai, who inhabit the lands around Tanzania's most popular tourist attraction, complain that they see little of the hundreds of millions of dollars tourists bring to their country each year.
