Following their warrior initiation by circumcision, Maasai youths of similar ages pass through many stages together before they can eventually become senior elders. At Mesheli in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a group of warriors dance, sing, drink, and eat to celebrate the end of an orpul, a forest retreat. During orpul, which might last weeks, the young men slaughter livestock and feast on meat; elders also teach them about medicinal plants and other traditional cultural practices.
