Heartbreak on the Serengeti
FEBRUARY 2006

Street Life in Robanda Photograph by Randy Olson
Neighbors catch up on the news at Robanda's nerve center, the Millennium Y2K Shop, which advertises "Everything You Need—Sugar, Rice, Wheat Flour, Maize Flour, Soda, Beer." What Robanda really needs, however, is more land. Located on the western doorstep of Serengeti National Park, the village has grown rapidly in recent years. Some believe that Robanda blocks the annual migration of the wildebeest, which puts this community of almost 3,000 on a collision course with conservationists.
