Milking Time

A Maasai woman milks a cow near Endulen, a village of 8,000 in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area of Tanzania. The mainstay of Maasai for centuries, milk has become a rare commodity for these pastoralists, whose population has increased fivefold in the past half century, while their livestock holdings have remained essentially even. Grains and beans now supplement the Maasai diet.
