Heartbreak on the Serengeti
FEBRUARY 2006
|
Riding With Wildebeests Photograph by Randy Olson
Maneuvering through a herd of wildebeests, a bicyclist picks his way along the Serengeti Plains outside Robanda. Wildebeest populations are thought to number around 1.2 million, a recent high number for this antelope species, whose annual travels have helped shape the Serengeti's rich ecosystem. Each year large numbers of wildebeests—as many as 200,000 by one estimate—are illegally killed for food or quick cash. Scientists say the harvest cannot be sustained.
