The art of the deal trumps the thrill of the chase when strangers meet in a hotel room in China to decide if they should become man and wife. The suitor has flown from Taiwan to Guilin in southern China to interview a variety of women selected by a matchmaking firm. The man makes his position clear: He wants to bring home a traditional, docile housewife, for him a threatened species back in Taiwan, where women are increasingly choosing career over family. The women also come with an agenda: Most are eager to improve their economic circumstances and escape small-town life in China and other Asian countries. Between 1997 and 2004, more than 300,000 foreign brides arrived in Taiwan.
