In Russia's far east, snow lingers in June along rivers on the Kamchatka Peninsula, home of Eurasia's largest brown bears. In Soviet times roughly 20,000 brown bears roamed this region. Today roughly 12,500 bears do, their future threatened by hunters and poachers, as well as by miners who have disturbed bear habitat to seek nickel, copper, cobalt, and gold.
