Russia's Bears
FEBRUARY 2006
|
High Alert Photograph by Steve Winter
Standing up gives a young bear seven feet (two meters) of elevation to better investigate an unknown sound or object. Every summer hundreds of bears forage here at Kurilskoye Lake, where some two million salmon migrate on their way to spawning grounds. Salmon poachers seeking fish eggs to sell as caviar often kill bears when they run across them around the water, one of the most serious threats facing the bears.
