Reviving a Lost Spirit
Photograph by Steve Winter

Bear skins soften the floor of a tent sheltering an Even family, the indigenous people of Kamchatka who once occasionally hunted bear—or nakat—using its skin and fur and honoring its spirit in traditional song and dance. The Even still sometimes hunt bears, but they shifted decades ago to large scale reindeer herding. Today only about 1,500 Even remain in Kamchatka, where they fish, herd reindeer, and hunt small game for subsistence.
