A Bear Unsnared
Photograph by Steve Winter

After recording a four-year-old male's vital statistics—including its 238-pound (108-kilogram) weight—Russian researchers prepare to release their captive. Vasily Schtukin, holding the rope at right, and the team have been working with the Wildlife Conservation Society to radio-collar and track about 28 Kamchatka bears. Among their goals: To improve bear census techniques and to map the critical habitat needed for bear conservation.
