Kronotsky State Biosphere Reserve, a 2.4-million-acre (971-thousand-hectare) wilderness established in 1926, is the oldest of Kamchatka's protected areas. Researchers have so far tagged and radio-collared two dozen bears in the reserve to track their movements.
