A Must for Married Women Photograph by Carolyn Drake
A hair stylist prepares a sheitel, Yiddish for wig, at a shop called Raizy's in Crown Heights. Married Orthodox women wear wigs in public, reserving the sight of their natural hair for the sole eyes of their husbands. Such modesty comes at a price: A sheitel with a natural look can cost upwards of $1,000.
