Treetop Scholars Photograph by Tim Laman
Perched 225 feet (68 meters) up in a redwood, botany professor Steve Sillett, at left, and graduate student Jim Spickler examine a wandering salamander. The men have tagged and released 44 of the amphibians living on fern mats high in the canopies of old-growth forests. "They are excellent climbers, so they have no competition from salamanders on the forest floor," says Sillett. "Generations of salamanders may spend their entire lives in the treetops."
