Desert Garden
Photograph by Tim Laman

Dotted with white blooms of dune evening primrose, a purple expanse of desert sand verbena carpets a slope in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Both species have a low tolerance for extremes of temperature and moisture. "Hot, arid winds may dry out the seedlings before they have a chance to grow," says Brian Cahill, an official with this 600,000-acre (242,800-hectare) park in southern California. These finicky flowers play a vital role in desert ecology. "In a good flower year we'll get a huge hatch of sphinx moth caterpillars, literally thousands at a time," says Cahill. "While the caterpillars take advantage of the blooms, hawks and other birds take advantage of the caterpillars."
