Dining on ocotillos in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, this peninsular bighorn sheep is a rare survivor. Listed as endangered, this southern California population numbers no more than 700. Widespread die-offs occurred with the introduction of domestic sheep and their diseases, a problem exacerbated by human encroachment, habitat reduction, and mountain lion predation.
