Ivano Columbo, a lifelong resident of the Italian Alps, gets ready to enjoy some homemade liquor and grappa—as well as a little sunshine—after a day of cross-country skiing with friends near the Lucomagno Pass. He, like many others, worries about the impact of global warming and mass tourism on Europe's winter playground. "There are still many very beautiful places," Columbo says. "But the glaciers are withdrawing and the small rustic lodges now look more like hotels."
