Help for the Herd Photograph by Melissa Farlow and Randy Olson
Looking for strays, Hannes Klingler herds his cows every morning from the mountains to his family's farm in Alpbach Valley, Austria. His father has owned the farm since 1930, but farm life has changed dramatically since then. Like many other farmers in the Alps, this family receives subsidies from the European Union, which allow them to export inexpensive food to world markets. "Some farmers would prefer to do without subsidies and charge more for the products," Hannes says.
