Embracing Tradition Photograph by Melissa Farlow and Randy Olson
Ready for revelry, single men dressed in costumes celebrate Pust—a local version of Carnival—by visiting each family in the village of Koseze, Slovenia. "We bring happiness into the house," says Matej Koren, wearing the multicolored hat. "We chase away the winter, illness, and other bad stuff and bring spring, health, and joy." Many Alpine villages still hold celebrations dating back centuries. "We like our roots," says Koren.
