Cruising the Strip Photograph by Lucy David
Lucy David, 17, photographed these boys as they wheeled down N.E. 2nd Avenue. Separated from the glamour of nearby Miami Beach by poverty, language, and culture, Little Haiti embraces a vibrant Caribbean identity all its own. Mom-and-pop shops fuel a colorful trade in traditional Haitian food, small variety stores called botanicas cater to voodoo practitioners, and churches deliver sermons in Spanish, French, and Creole. "People think Little Haiti is poor," David says. "But it's not all poor. There's a lot going on."
