"This was an awesome opportunity," reported a National Geographic Photo Camper after spending four days with professional photographers and editors in Annapolis, Maryland. High school students from cities across the country find themselves  "seeing their neighborhoods for the first time," from behind the lenses of digital cameras.

Through a program established in 2003 by the National Geographic Society and Annapolis-based VisionWorkshops, students from underserved areas are given the chance to experience the challenges and joys of photojournalism.  They are guided and coached by their expert mentors as they research and plan their assignment—to tell a story about their community from their own perspectives.  After an intense week of lectures, demonstrations, fieldwork, and editing sessions, the students present their story. The results have been impressive, as can be seen in this month's ZipUSA on Little Haiti. And the students can't help but feel proud when they see their photographs blown up and displayed in public settings.

In 2006 Photo Camps will be held in San Francisco, Miami, Washington, D.C., and New York.  Additional information can be obtained from VisionWorkshops: Kirsten@VisionWorkshops.org
