One Man's Treasure
Photograph by David McLain

On his farm in Sedalia, Missouri, Jim Sneed sucks up ragweed pollen directly from the source with his custom-made field vacuum. Sneed harvests 50 different types of pollen—including orchard grass, marsh elder, oak, hickory, cottonwood, and mulberry—which he sells to pharmaceutical companies. They process the powder and sell it for use in immunotherapy. A patient who suffers from hay fever, for instance, will often get small shots of ragweed pollen extract to help desensitize an overactive immune system. While this therapy is one way to treat allergies, doctors are still working to devise more effective immunotherapy that would work in weeks instead of years.
