Irrawaddy River
MAY 2006
|
The Water Road Photograph by Steve Winter
Passengers and cargo spill onto the decks of a ferry making a ten-hour run from Mandalay in central Myanmar to the capital, Yangon, at the head of the river's delta. A soldier appears to pay little heed to his fellow travelers. However, any behavior considered unpatriotic—speaking to foreigners, traveling without a permit, and voicing any criticism of the ruling regime—could draw the attention of government informers and covert agents often lurking in crowds.
