Workaday River
Photograph by Steve Winter

On a stretch of shore north of Mandalay, the Irrawaddy serves man and beast. Soon a boat will come to haul to market a sack of tobacco guarded by a young boy. Meanwhile a water buffalo freed from a plow readies itself for a washing from its owner. Both man and boy drink from the river, not a risk-free move given the sewage, silt, and mining chemicals that taint the waters.
