An abscessed wisdom tooth inflicted great pain on one of the Moche culture's rare powerful women at the time of her death, in her late 20s, in about A.D. 450. She was likely one of the leaders—maybe even the supreme ruler—of the site now known as El Brujo. The dry climate on the north coast of Peru naturally mummified her body, recently discovered in almost perfect condition, but an autopsy couldn't determine what killed her. Experts are continuing to study her body and her burial to determine who she was and how she may have met her untimely end.
