Material Culture Photograph by Ira Block
Loaded with symbolic meaning still not entirely understood, strands of beads encircled the neck of the mummy from El Brujo when she was laid to rest. Though the cords disintegrated over the centuries and the beads fell out of place, archaeologists can reconstruct 15 necklaces—probably worn one at a time depending on the occasion. Skillfully crafted from lapis lazuli, quartz crystal, silver, and a gold-copper alloy, the jewelry attests to this person's elite position, and to the wealth and sophistication of the Moche culture.
