Mei Xiang, at right, arrived in Washington, D.C., on a long-term loan from China in December 2000. Her first baby arrived at 3:41 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2005. Hugely popular with zoo visitors, Tai Shan, left, is the first giant panda cub born at the Smithsonian National Zoo to survive infancy.
