Five months after Katrina, a stack of bricks was the only thing left standing at the site of U.S. Senator Trent Lott's house in Pascagoula, Mississippi, near the shore of the Gulf of Mexico. Katrina's casualties in the state included more than 200 dead and hundreds of thousands of people whose homes were either destroyed or damaged by the tsunami-like storm surge that washed over the coastline.
