Puzzling Symbols Photograph by Ira Block
Ghostly images that float across the sandstone at Sego Canyon, Utah, were painted by people who hunted and gathered in the region beginning perhaps as early as 6,000 B.C. and continuing until as late as A.D. 500. Experts have little idea what the figures mean, but they see similarities between this style of art, known as Barrier Canyon, and the art of the Fremont, who may have been descendants of the ancient nomads. This site was badly vandalized, but several years ago the Bureau of Land Management hired a conservator to remove the graffiti and preserve the images.
