Warriors wielding a club, a throwing stick or spear, and shields belong to a large Fremont battle or hunting scene with more than 60 human and animal figures that cover a wall in Nine Mile Canyon, Utah. "This suggests that violence was part of the cultural landscape," says archaeologist Renee Barlow. Actually some 40 miles (64 kilometers) long, the main canyon holds thousands of rock-art images—all in danger as an energy company proceeds with plans to drill for natural gas beneath an adjacent plateau.
