Utah's Ancient Fremont

Carefully picking their way down a canyon wall near Range Creek, archaeologists Renee Barlow and Joel Boomgarden prepare to inspect a granary built by the Fremont. Hundreds of such structures once contained corn grown on the creek's floodplain, and some require difficult rappelling for modern climbers to visit. "The Fremont must have been fearless, amazing climbers," says Barlow. But why did they store food in such remote locations? Sites throughout the former Wilcox ranch, which are just beginning to be studied, may hold some answers.
