Grim Message?

Fremont petroglyphs at McKee Springs, Utah, include a round shield flanked by two figures with headdresses. Though the meaning of the panel remains obscure, a popular interpretation has the figure on the left holding a severed, bleeding head by the hair. "It could be a way of warning trespassers to stay away," says archaeologist Jerry Spangler. Whatever the purpose, "the execution of rock-art images was a major focus of prehistoric lifeways," Spangler says, "important socially, politically, and ideologically."
