Wildlife Diversity Photograph by Michael Melford
A white-tailed deer fawn curls up in the meadowgrass of Cades Cove. Overhunting and disease had nearly wiped out deer in the area by about 1930. But the park's creation in 1934 gave deer protection, and they have rebounded to a few thousand today. About 70 mammal species live in the park, cataloged as part of an ambitious biological inventory aiming to identify every living species in the park—about 14,000 so far.
