Untamed Rivers Photograph by Stephen L. Alvarez
Dense, untrammeled vegetation lends a prehistoric feel to the interior of the enormous Kavakuna Doline, one of ten or so large sinkholes in this part of New Britain. After exploring Ora, Robbie Shone, left, Dave Nixon, second from left, and two local porters trek through river mist to approach the bottom of Kavakuna. Near the end of the expedition, the team spotted a previously unknown doline from the air, a river visible deep within it. "You cannot really get much better than this," says expedition leader David Gill. "It's an incredibly exotic, beautiful, untouched area."
